Within the last years more and more people heard and learned about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. But who is the genius behind this groundbreaking technology? Who really created Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency which was already adopted as legal tender in one country in 2021 and may become the new currency of the world?
If you dig deeper, you will hear of the name Satoshi Nakamoto regarding the creator of Bitcoin. But, Sathoshi Nakamoto remains anonymous and is just a nickname of a person or group most certainly.
In the last years several people have come forward and claimed to be Satoshi but till now all of these claims stand unproven. All we know for sure is that Satoshi Nakamoto would be a billionaire right now since there is a wallet with over 1 million Bitcoin remaining unmoved since they were mined in the early days.
The name of Satoshi Nakamoto is first mentioned in the early days of Bitcoin. He appeared 2009 in e-mails and internet blogs. But this took an end in 2010 when Nakamoto said in an e-mail that he had 'moved on to other things'.
Dorian Nakamoto
Dorian Nakamoto is an engineer and academic based in the United States. He was named as the creator of Bitcoin in a Newsweek article in 2014 where the author said that the real name of the Japanese-American is Satoshi Nakamoto. Dorian Nakamoto denied to be the creator of Bitcoin and also initiated legal steps against the newspaper.
Hal Finney
Hal Finney was an active member of the Bitcoin community prior and after launch of the cryptocurrency who died in 2014. Finney was the first person to actually receive Bitcoin in a transaction. Maybe just coincidence but Hal Finney used to live just a few blocks from Dorian Nakamoto. There are theories which say that Dorian Nakamoto's name was used as an inspiration for the pseudonym of Satoshi Nakamoto by Finney.
Nick Szabo
Nick Szabo was also an early member of the cypherpunk movement - just like Hal Finney. He was well connected in that space and in 2005 he wrote a blog post about a hypothetical digital currency called 'Bitgold' that would not rely on the trust of third parties.
Craig Wright
Craig Wright is an Australian academic and businessman and two news articles suggested that Wright might be the person behind Bitcoin. Further investigations led to the conclusion that Wright perpetrated an elaborate hoax. In the end of 2021, a jury rejected a civil claim against Wright. The family of his former colleague, the late David Kleinman, argued that Wright and Kleinman co-created Bitcoin. Therefore, the family demanded half of the coins on the 'Satoshi-Wallet'. Since Wright won the case, he never had to prove he had access to this infamous wallet. He still claims that he is the founder of Bitcoin.
